Getting A Marriage License

The Commonwealth of Virginia requires all couples to have a license to be married. A license is easily obtained at any Clerk of the Courts Office in the state and is valid throughout the Commonwealth.

If you are having a rehearsal it is always wise to bring it and give to your officiant. Once less thing to worry about on your wedding day!

Application for a Marriage License

Both applicants are encouraged to prefill the Marriage License Application to save time.

• License is issued by the Circuit Court of any city in the State of Virginia.
• Out-of-state residents may apply at any Clerk’s Office throughout the state.
• No blood test requires.
• The license must be used within 60 days of the date of issue or it will expire.
• Both parties must be present to obtain a marriage license.
• The Clerk’s office requires some form of ID, such as a driver’s license, military ID, or certified copy of a birth certificate.
• The fee for the license is $30.00. Cash or Credit Card accepted. (There is a $2.00 fee when using a Credit Card.)
• For divorced persons, there is no statutory waiting period before marriage after the divorce is final. A copy of the divorce decree is not required when applying for a license.

Certified Copies of Your Marriage License

Certified copies of a marriage license may be obtained from the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office that issued the marriage license. Ask if you can prepay for your certified copies! Or you may make the request in person or by mail. To request a certified copy of your marriage license by mail, complete the Certified copy of Marriage License Form and mail to:
